President Yoweri Museveni has today fulfilled one of the long awaited pledges to the people of Teso Sub-Region by launching the construction of a fruit factory at the Uganda Investment Authorities Industrial and Business Park at Arapai in Soroti district.

The fruit factory is a joint venture between the Government of Uganda under the Uganda Development Corporation (UDC) that has injected US$2.2 million for the provision of the facilities and the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) which is a development arm of the Government of the Republic of South Korea that has provided US$7.4 million for the purchase of the machinery and provision of the training of the personnel.

The construction of the Soroti Fruit Factory is scheduled to commence in November this year and is projected to be completed in 18 months. The daily production capacity of the plant when fully operational will be 120 metric tons of processed fruits.

President Museveni assured the people of Teso that fruits being a big cash crop, have a higher demand in the world than coffee or cotton. He attributed the delay of the construction of the plant to lack of entrepreneurs and politics of lies. He, therefore, asked all leaders at all levels to sensitize the population more on entrepreneurship.

“Now we have to use government to do the work of the private sector. So, let’s start with this plant that will create employment and also add value to fruits. But we need more fruits for this factory,” he noted.

Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Hon. Amelia Kyambadde, at the event disclosed that 30,000 farmers have been trained in Teso Sub-Region in fruit growing. She called on leaders to engage local farmers to acquire training. She added that the factory would provide direct and indirect employment to the people of the region.

The South Korean Ambassador to Uganda, Mr. Mr. Park Jong-Dae, thanked President Museveni and all leaders in the region for mobilizing farmers to get the training adding that they will form the nucleus of the fruit processing factory. He also said the plant will not only boost the economy of Uganda but will also help in the transformation of the region and the country as a whole. The King also commended his mother for providing skills to the youth through the Foundation.

The Queen Mother, Best Kemigisa, lauded the President for loving Tooro adding that the youths in the Kingdom love their President.

She told the President that the Foundation was being established with the purpose of facilitating the youths to equip them with skills to be empowered and self-sustaining.

On the same event, the president re-emphasized the major goal that brought the NRM to power which was to promote peace and unity.

“I want to remind you of the mission of NRM. It came to Uganda when the situation was bad. The target was to remove the Army that was killing the people. We had a mission to bring unity in the country. We are strong because we have the philosophy of the unity of the people,” he said.
